Skin Turnover

What is Turnover?

Turnover is the process of cell renewal. New skin cells are created in the basal layer at the deepest part of the skin. These are gradually pushed upwards until they become horny cells. New cells are generated every 28 days and horny cells fall off every 14 days. Our skin is constantly being renewed with new cells!

The skin has stem cells in the epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous tissue. In the basal layer of the epidermis there are ‘epidermal stem cells’ that create new skin cells. These play an important role in supporting turnover.
